"The selection of Elinor Ostrom as co-recipient of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Economics will do much to advance anarchist theory among people who traffic in ideas.  Ostrom is being cited for her work on the management of common pool resources, or 'commons', and should inspire more thinkers to recognize the potential for solutions to problems that seem immune to both private property and government property solutions." Ich selber habe mir das Buch Governing the commons aus dem Jahr 1990 bestellt, und werde mich gegebenenfalls an dieser Stelle dazu äussern.

Ostrom zum Zweiten

Auch Reason gibt der frischgebackenen Nobelpreisträgerin libertäre Credentials:

"When economists show that market arrangements fail, they usually make the simple recommendation that 'the' state should take care of these problems. Elinor Ostrom has demonstrated empirically that 'the' state may not be 'the' solution. Her work argues for the wisdom of institutional diversity, looking to individuals to solve problems rather than relying on top down, one-size-fits-all solutions. The conventional wisdom assumes that natural resources and environmental problems should be solved in a centralized - and if possible, global - manner. Through innovative analysis in the field, in the experimental laboratory, and in theory, Ostrom’s work has show that creative solutions to problems such as the depletion of common pool resources exist outside of the sphere of national governments. Die taz hingegen sieht Ostrom in einer Reihe mit dem Keynesianer Krugman und dem eher sozialliberalen Amartya Sen (der für die Presse als "links" gilt, weil er aus Indien kommt) als weiteres "Feigenblatt" in einer "Bastion der Marktradikalen". Tja, seltsam dann, dass die gleichen "Marktradikalen" den Daumen hoch heben. Aber das übersteigt wohl den Horizont der taz.

Ja, wat denn nu?

Zuerst lese ich auf Tagesschau.de dass mit Elinor Ostrom eine gestandene Antiliberale den Wirtschaftsnobelpreis gewinnt: "Die 1933 geborene Ostrom werde für ihre Arbeit zu Gemeinschaftseigentum ausgezeichnet, teilte das Komitee weiter mit. Die Wissenschaftlerin geht dabei der Frage nach, wie öffentliche Güter - etwa Weideland oder Fischgründe - durch Nutzergemeinschaften verwaltet werden können. Dabei widerlegte sie die gängige Theorie, wonach Gemeinschaftseigentum von den Nutzern ausgebeutet wird und deswegen entweder reguliert oder privatisiert werden sollte."

In freudiger Erwartung der dort zu erwartenden Wutausbrüche über die Preisverleihung an eine Bolschewikin eile ich zum Mises Economics Blog, und siehe da: dort freut man sich, dass zum ersten Mal seit Friedrich Hayek 1974 zwei zumindest ansatzweise der "Austrian School of Economics" nahe stehenden Ökonomen den Nobelpreis erhalten haben. Huh?

Vielleicht sollte man sich mit den beiden Gewinnern dieses Jahres mal genauer auseinandersetzen. Insbesondere Ostrom hört sich eigentlich nach libertärem Sozialismus an: "Ostrom's work is about how commons problems can be solved locally, from the bottom up without centralized state authority. Its all about how you can get social cooperation even when something can't (technologically) be chopped into parcels of private property." (Kommentar Adam Martin auf dem oben verlinkten Mises Blog). Ja, ich glaube, da werde ich bei Gelegenheit einen Blick reinwerfen.
